I’m just in a weird sort of funk lately where I’m feeling rather like I have absolutely no focus. This post will be proof. This mindset unfortunately bleeds over into putting words on the page. It’s not writers block, per se. I’ve been writing some new things. The problem is I can’t seem to get rolling on them. I write a chapter or a beginning then drift off like a dandelion seed on a breeze. By the way, it never really dawned on me that people actually eat dandelion greens until we were watching an episode of The Sopranos last night and there was Tony shoveling them into his maw like they were the greatest thing he’d ever tasted. I would think they’d be bitter like mustard greens. It’s very odd, the things we humans sometimes decide to eat.
See what I did there? I’m like a helium balloon lately. Somebody tie me to a chair.
I have been trying some new recipes. Here’s one of them: http://www.fullforkahead.com/2013/02/08/chiang-mai-curry-noodle-soup/
The family loved it, but don’t be afraid of the curry like I was. I backed off a little and wished I hadn’t. Also, the next time I make it, I’ll cook the chicken just like the recipe says, not like she did in the oven. I skipped the garnishments too, and we ate it over noodles. Overall, though, a keeper for sure. And just an advance warning: Full Fork Ahead is a great site and very addictive! Plan to get sucked in if you like to cook.
The hubs took me to see Zero Dark Thirty last weekend. Now I have an even bigger girl crush on Jessica Chastain. I first fell madly in love with her in The Help. She was fantastic in this movie, and the movie itself was very good as well. Tough to watch at times because of the subject matter, but compelling nonetheless. I’m a bit miffed it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture or Best Director, but if they let me vote Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises would have been nominated too in both those categories.
I’m still (not) patiently waiting to hear some news on several submissions I have out, 2 shorts and 2 longs. I subscribe to the old mantra “No news is good news” when it comes to things of this nature. I want to think if what I sent them was awful, they’d tell you straight away, not waste anymore time with it, right? RIGHT?
So, anything interesting going on in your world since mine is a total snoozefest?
I love Jessica Chastain. She’s ethereal in Tree of Life, too, if you haven’t seen it.
Supposedly, you have to get the dandelion greens before the plant flowers, or they’re no good. Weird, right?
Actually, that kind of makes sense. Some veggies are considered past their best flavor when they bloom. Still, ick. I will have to look for Tree of Life. She was really good in the Tom Hardy movie about the brothers in Kentucky. I forget the name of it.
Maybe your funk is about your brain replenishing itself before the next big burst of creative energy? In The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron writes that we all need breaks to fortify our “wells” of creativity. You can’t constantly draw water without it going dry. Be kind to yourself. You’ll be back soon enough! And now I’m going to get addicted to your new cooking site. xo
I saw this post pop up in our stats, and then I saw the title, so I *had* to come over and see if you really were OK – whew! What a relief! Very glad you enjoyed the soup! I actually made it again this past weekend and put even more red curry in it than before due to a cold I’m trying to exorcise. So far the cold’s winning, but in the meantime my taste buds are happy. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you for the kind words and hope you find your focus and get the writing rolling again soon! We all go through these kinds of funks.
Thanks for checking in on me kmont! The soup was dynamite! I share your stuff on FB all the time too.
The rice pudding recipe is the next thing I’m going to try. Sweets always help improve my mood.
I think a lot of editors have extended deadlines recently, if that makes you feel better about the waiting game lol.
I find the thought of Tony Soprano shovelling anything into his maw that isn’t meat or cake very strange indeed! Love The Sopranos – didn’t notice the dandelion greens so am not as observant as you. You definitely are not dead! Hope everything comes together for you soon. I know how you feel
Bel x
Hey, look – my new book buddy, Bel Anderson! Yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with Tony. He pisses me off with all of his cheating, but then he kills off another character I dislike worse than him and redeems himself.
I’m clawing my way out of the funk, slowly but surely.
Thanks for stopping by!
